Adaptation...A Way of Life...
After gaining background knowledge of adaptations, squid, and the squid’s many adaptations, our class dissected squid earlier this week. Based on your knowledge, which adaptation do you believe is the most important for the squid's survival? (Be careful to give specific details to support your answer.) Please review the blog comment expectations found in the column to the right.
After doing the squid dissection, I found multiple important adaptations. In my opinion, I think that the most important one is the fact that the squid can camouflage itself. One way it can do this is, it can lay freckled side up on the sand. It can also float on the surface of the water and have the light go through it. This can help the squid protect itself, when predators are looking for a tasting snack. I hope these reasons help you understand my point of view!
ReplyDeleteAfter dissecting the squid, I believe the ink sack is the most important part for the squid to survive from predators. The ink is black and it will be hard for predators to see it’s prey. The tentacles are another important part of the squid’s survival. The squid can suction cup to the predators or to rocks.
ReplyDeleteI think that the squid’s most important adaptation is its speckled and non speckled sides. I think this because it helps them camouflage themselves into the oceans surroundings. Their speckled side helps them blend in with the sand and their non speckled side helps them blend in with the light color of the water. So that means the it can swim on way and that would make it hard to find because you can not see it.
ReplyDeleteI think that the squid's tentacles are the most important adaptation because once the squid has spotted its prey, it can suction on to it and reel it in. I think this is important because if the prey happens to be pretty fast, the squid can approach from a distance and not scare the animal away. Once the squid has reeled it in, the arms grab it and the squid is ready to eat.
ReplyDeleteThe squids best adaptations are the arms and the tentacles.I believe this because they work so well together by the tentacles pulling the food in and giving it to the arms. This adaptation will help them because the tentacles are longer to grab prey that is farther away. The arms can help by bringing the food into the mouth and getting food from the tentacles. The tenticals and arms work very well together.

I think the beak helps the squid most to survive because it helps the squid take tiny bites, if it didn't have the beak it would get brain damage, and it can take bigger food. First, the squid has long tentacles to grab in the food that it wants. Then, it can eat it with its beak and if it gets too much food at a time then it would die. Next, if the squid didn’t have a beak then it would get brain damage. It’s esophagus is right in front of the brain so if it took big bites the esophagus would clog and then the brain would be damaged and the squid would die. Lastly, with a beak it can take big food because the beak will makes sure it doesn't eat too much at a time. This is helpful for when the food is running scarcely low it can take one big piece of food and go longer without eating.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think the most important adaptation of a squid is the siphon. The siphon does so many different thing that helps the squid. For example It gets rid of the squids waste, it squirts out the ink when in danger, and it propels the squid forward by sucking in water then squirting it out of the siphon. Without the siphon the squid could not survive because it couldn't move, it couldn't get its waste out, and it couldn't save itself from danger. The other squid adaptations help the squid a lot but the siphon is the most important.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important adaptation for the squids survival is having camouflage because the squid is a predator and prey. A squid needs to hide from prey so that it can catch it with its tentacles and eat it. A squids predator will try to attack the squid from underneath so the squid has a light color on the bottom and on the top where the mantle is, it is a darker color to blend in with the sand.
ReplyDeleteI think that the adaption to be able to swim straight is the most important because if it couldn't swim straight it would be easier prey. The squid would have to swim straight, to be able to catch its prey, and also swim away from predators. This is very important so the squid won't die.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the squid’s most important adaptation is it’s fins. The fins help the squid to swim steadily and straight, so that it won’t spin around in a spiral, due to it’s torpedo shape. These fins allow the squid to get away fast when a predator is near or to catch prey. If the squid didn’t have these fins it would swim all over the place and either lose it’s prey, or run into it’s predator. The squid would have to resort to using it’s ink, which would then have to refill before it could use it again. The fins are a perfect example of the squid’s most useful adaptation because they help the squid to survive in it’s environment, and it helps the squid to save it’s other adaptations for more helpless occasions.
ReplyDeleteAfter thinking very carefully about the adaptations that a squid has I think that the most important one it has is suction cups. The first reason is is that the prey in the ocean is very slippery so suction cups can help grab it. Another reason I think that the suction cups are the most important adaptation a squid has is because If it didn’t have suction cups it would have to use a lot of pressure to pull it in so it would have to use more energy to get food. The final reason I think suction cups are the most important adaptation is that without them it would have to live closer to the top of the ocean where the smaller fish are and then the predators around the area could eat the squid.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the most important adaptation for the squid is its freckles on the top and the clear on the bottom. I think that this is the most important adaptation for the squid because if a predator sees it from below they will not see anything because it is clear on the bottom. And if a predator sees it from above the squid then it will see the freckles and think it is sand. in conclusion, the most important adaptation for a squid is its coloring.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the most important part of the of the squids body of survival is the beck. I think it is the most important part of the squid because, without it the suid could not eat because it needs to rip off smaller pieces of the food because if the food is in too big of pieces the squid will die. The beach also helps kill the prey that the squid must eat
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Blake,
ReplyDeleteI believe the squids most important feature is it’s beak. Because the beak helps the squid eat, if they ate huge bites it would hurt their brain. When squid eat food it goes through almost their whole body. Also the beak helps them catch prey, one type of squid likes paralysing it’s prey so then it’s a easy dining. Imagine that you hand is made of jelly and you have to carve a roast using a knife that has no handle, a squid is squishy and it’s beak is sharp like a knife, it’s amazing how it does not cut them. The beak also helps rips off tiny little bits off the carcass, for easy digestion. It’s beak also serves as protection.
Sincerely,
Lauren Nagel
I think the squid’s color is the most important to their survival. I think this because from the top of the squid it’s speckled because the bottom of the floor is sand and they have a kinda dark color and it’s speckled for camouflage. The bottom is a lighter color because from the bottom of the squid it camouflages with the lighter colors above. Obviously the squid’s color is the most important thing for their survival because of the camouflage.
ReplyDeleteI think that the beak would be the most important. I think that because it helps the squid break down the food so it can digest better. The main reason why it helps is so that the big chunks of food don’t damage the brain. If the squid did not have that then it would have a very short life span with its brain loosing pieces. The brain could lose major parts and it wouldn’t swim correctly or not shootout ink when it needs to. The beak also makes food easier to swallow through the mouth ball and esophagus. The beak plays a major role in a squid’s life.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think the most important adaptation for a squid is their beak. I think the squids beak is important because of the small size of their esophagus and the fact that it runs through the squids brain. The beak is used to tear of small pieces of their preys meat so that when the food travels through their esophagus and brain they wont die. The reason the squids could die from taking to big of a bite is because their esophagus runs through their brain and if the squid took to big of a bite it would stretch out their brain causing their death. As you can see the most important adaptation for a squid is their beak.
ReplyDeleteSquids use their ink spray as their LAST defense. This surprised me because, I would think they would use it first to help them get away. I learned hat they actually use their camouflage as their first defense, and this makes a lot of sense, since they change color so fast to blend into their environment, thus adapting to their surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI think the important adaptation for the squid is its suction cups because they help the squid survive by helping it grab its food. And helps it picks up things it needs. Without their suction cups on their arms they probably still would be able to get food but it would just be a lot harder than if they did have them because it would be slipping out of their tentacles.
ReplyDeleteAfter dissecting the squid, I believe that the ink sack is one of the most important things that help the squid survive, because it protects the squid from predators.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important adaptation is that the top of the squid has dark spots so when predators above think its just the sea because its camoflashed . The bottom part of the squid is white so when predators from the bottom of the squid think its just the top of the ocean. I think this is important because this helps the squid a lot . This helps them because predators can’t tell if their there or not there.
ReplyDeleteAfter dissecting the squid I saw that it had many adaptations. The one I thought was most important is their beak. If the squid has to eat large meals then its beak can pick of small peices of the large prey.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think the most important thing is on the squid is the tentacles because they catch their food with them and if they didn't have them all of there food would've slipped away from them.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important adaptation of a squid is its fins. The fin is important to the squid because if it didn't have fins it would spin around and around and not be able to swim away from predators. The fin is also important to the squid because it keeps the squid on the side with the spots up so that it can camouflage from predators. Without the fin, the squid could not move very well or hide.
ReplyDeleteI think that the squids most important adaption to survive is their ink. They use their ink as a last resource to get away from predators. Their ink makes it so the predator can't see them so they can get away.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important thing of a squid is the tenticals. I thinks this because if they didn't have them they wouldn't have a way to grab food. They would die with out eating.
ReplyDeleteThe squid’s most important adaptation is the ink sack because when the squid is in danger from a predator, it can disappear into a cloud of black ink to be “invisible.” Also, the ink may scare the predator away and may be hazardous to the predator. This is what I think the squid’s most important adaption is.
ReplyDeleteI think the most important thing is there tentacles. If the squid didn't have them he couldn't attach to anything and not be able to eat. And that's why I think the tentacles are important.
ReplyDeleteAfter dissecting the squid I saw that it had a couple adaptations. The one thing i thought was very important was their beak. If the squid had to eat large meals then its beak can pick out small prey or large prey and eat it depending on the animal
ReplyDeleteAfter dissecting the squid, I noticed it had some very important adaptations, and I think the most important one is it can escape it's predators by squirting out ink around the squid's self. Without this adaptation, there wouldn't be near as many as there are today.
ReplyDeleteI think the squid’s big eyes helped it survive the most, because the eyes help the squid watch for predators.
